Logan Hospital serves one of Queensland’s largest growth corridors and has one of the States busiest emergency departments, with demand for health services continuing to increase.

To ease pressure on the hospital, the Stage 2 expansion will add a new high-tech modular ward as construction continues on the hospital’s major vertical expansion. The project will deliver a 2-storey building with a 28-bed patient ward on the ground floor and administration facilities on level 1. The ward will focus on providing care for patients who need to stay in the hospital a little longer due to complex medical or social needs – freeing up acute medical beds.

This project’s modular nature means that it is built entirely off-site, taken apart in truck-sized modules, and then transported to the site where it is reassembled. The objective is to do as much as possible off-site in a controlled environment that isn’t disruptive to the existing functionality of the hospital. The ward will be pre-fitted out, complete to approximately 90% with plumbing, medical gases, clinical lighting and nurses’ stations. The building is then installed over the course of 3 days with a 6 week commissioning process reducing on-site works to only 3 months.

Challenges included integrating the new building into the existing site infrastructure and demolishing the existing buildings. However, through strong collaboration and communication with MSH advisors, Hutchinson Builders Design Managers and incumbent services contractors, we have provided clever solutions to mitigate risks and deliver a highly successful project.
