The creation of new nursing simulation labs and practice rooms will enable year-on-year increases in intake of nursing students into the Bachelor of Nursing at the Burwood Campus. The upgraded facilities will also put Deakin University at the forefront of excellence in clinical care and outcomes, attracting domestic and international healthcare professionals for training and upskilling.

The project consisted of the repurposing and redevelopment of existing spaces in Buildings W and Y.

Key elements of the projects included:

  • Ground Level (Building W) – redeveloped to create Nursing Simulation Ward Room spaces, including Ensuites, Observation Room, Preparation, Stores, Practice Room, Staff Workstation Area and Student Breakout spaces.
  • Level 1 (Building Y) – existing areas repurposed to create a Midwifery Nursing Simulation Ward Room space, Dirty Utility, Treatment and Store Room

Design principles were developed and followed to reflect the University’s requirements and through stakeholder engagement with infrastructure and property group representatives, these included contribution of the site to the university, compliance, accessibility, sustainability objectives, refurbishment and research and innovation.

The project design demonstrated a commitment to delivering environmentally sustainable design principles and assist in the delivery of the Deakin University 2025 Sustainability Commitments and targets.
